APA I San Diego is calling for photography that represents your best work; images that show your unique vision, creative passion, and individualistic style, titled or untitled. 20 images will be chosen for display at a one-night only auction to benefit the Museum of Photographic Arts mopa.org. All entries will be judged by Thomas Werner, author of the book The Fashion Image for Bloomsbury Press, London, an Editor at Large for IRKmagazine, a Paris based fashion and culture magazine and web site, and also an Assistant Professor and past Photography Program Director at Parsons School of Design in New York. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 images. Deadline to enter is October 9th!

MEET OUR JUDGE: Thomas Werner

Thomas is the author of the book The Fashion Image for Bloomsbury Press, London, and an Editor at Large for IRKmagazine, a Paris based fashion and culture magazine and web site. An Assistant Professor and past Photography Program Director at Parsons School of Design in New York, Thomas currently lectures internationally on topics of photography, fashion, education, and contemporary professional practices. He is also the former owner of Thomas Werner Gallery in Manhattan’s Chelsea Art District, and recently lead a team developing a media and literacy web site and resource center in five languages, Spanish, French, Russian, Arabic and English for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations/UNESCO. Werner has worked with the Department of State on cultural projects in Russia, and been a photography consultant for COACH and Rodale Publishing, among others. He is a recurrent instructor at the United Nations Education First Summer School, and is presenting workshops on effective message development and visual communication on an international basis.
Over the last 11 years his research work has been Russia centric spending an average of 40 days a year there partnering with 32 cultural, educational, and governmental organizations to develop projects in 29 cities. The focus has been the introduction of contemporary education methodologies, and the development of creative cultures within the country. Russian partners have included: The State Hermitage Museum, the National Center of Contemporary Art, Perm Regional Government, The Moscow Biennale for Young Art, National Centre of Photography for the Russian Federation, The Central State Archive of Film, Photographic and Phonographic Documents, The Pro Arte Foundation, and others. He has curated exhibitions in the United States and abroad, including seven co-curated exhibitions at the State Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg, Russia. His private collection of Russian photographs and artifacts have been exhibited internationally.

SWC will pay for conference registration, flight, hotel stay, and $45 per day for food.

Due to school and grant rules, SWC will need to arrange and pay flights and hotel.

The flight on 11/2 will most likely be a morning flight.

The flight on 11/4 will mostly likely be a late afternoon flight.

1 SUV rental to help with travel in town for the group of 4.

Students need to be available Nov, 2-4th to apply.

Here is the process:

3 currently enrolled students in Photo & Digital classes will be chosen from the applicants.

Priority will be given to students registered in advanced classes (beyond 192 or 205).

If space is available after looking at applicants from advanced students, students from 192 or 205 are eligible.

The winners will be announced on 9/26.

Come see the Medium Festival of Photography with Southwestern College Photo & Digital Program, Oct. 18-21

We are happy to announce that we will be sending 13 students to the Medium Festival of Photography at the Lafayette Hotel in San Diego during Oct. 19-21.

  • Admission to the Keynote Lecture with John Divola
  • Admission to all Fri. and Sat. festival lectures, and the Sunday tour in Tijuana.
  • Admission to the Festival Reception on Oct. 19

10 additional students will be chosen for the Keynote Lecture Only

  • On Oct. 19 our Keynote Lecture with John Divola will kick off the Present Tense lecture series at 7pm
  • Admission to the Keynote Lecture is also included with all VIP and Festival Passes.
  • Keynote lecture guests are invited to join the event Reception at 8:30pm, following the lecture

Here is the process I will use to select students.

For the Full Festival Pass, I will draw 3 names at random from a container.

Students who are not picked for the Full Festival Pass will be automatically entered into the Keynote Speaker Drawing.

I will place beginning students (Art 192, 205) students into the “A” container and draw 5 names at random.

I will place all other students into the “B” container and draw 5 names at random.

I plan to announce the winners on 9/14/18.
