Colors of Life 2014 Photo Contest

Colors of Life 2014

4.jpg

Dear Friends of Colors of Life:

We’ve been off the radar screen for a while but still busy – the last exhibition of Colors of Life "Investing in Women and Girls" will be exhibited in Washington DC at the Organization of American States’ F Street Photo Gallery Building from July 9 through October 17, 2014. We are also pleased to announce that this year’s Photo Contest will support the activities of a Washington DC non-profit Life Pieces to Masterpieces (http://www.lifepieces.org).

LPTP is an exemplary organization that uses art as a tool to complement its after-school, weekend and summer educational and training programs aimed at young African-American males, ages 3-25, that live in some of DC’s poorest neighborhoods.

Unfortunately, in the United States the specter of poverty has long haunted communities of color. Nearly 10 million African-Americans, including four in 10 black children, live in poverty and around 12% of African Americans are unemployed. Many of these populations in poverty are clustered in DC neighborhoods east of the Anacostia River, in places that reflect the legacy of decades of racial discrimination, legally-sanctioned segregation and failed public housing policies.

In these neighborhoods, it is common for very few people to have steady jobs, crime and violence are commonplace, schools are often chaotic and ineffective, places to exercise are few and unsafe and healthy food options are unavailable or over-priced. Children growing up in high-poverty neighborhoods face terrible risks and challenges that undermine their chances of escaping poverty as adults. LPTM with its programs helps these African-American male youths increase their potential as individuals by giving them a sense of awareness and the possibility to grow into self-confident, educated young men.

The Colors of Life Photo Contest 2014 will call for photos highlighting the value education has for every individual, regardless of gender, race or religion and will be online soon with dates, rules, awards and deadlines on http://www.colorsoflife.org/photocontest.

We look forward to receiving your images and having a successful, interesting photo contest 2014!

FOUR DAY WORKSHOPS

If you’re considering entering our extraordinary workshop program – don’t wait until the last minute; some will fill in very quickly. Register now to assure your place.

Fine Art Photography

DUANE MICHALS: Fine Art Photography Master Class

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/duane1a.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/duane3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/duane4.jpg]

This workshop represents a very rare occasion to study for several days with one of the most influential fine art photographers working today. During the days of this workshop, students will immerse themselves in the making of photographs, participate in class critiques and discussions. This will greatly clarify the process of taking the next step and help them to find their own path in fine art photography. Duane will guide students to mine their own experience to tell personal stories. This class is a game-changer.

TODD HIDO: Fine Art Photography: A Method Demystified

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/todd1.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/todd2.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/todd3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/todd4.jpg]

Todd Hido’s work spans multiple genres including night scenes, landscapes and portraiture. He works in rich, syntactical layers that he expertly sequences into simple, powerful narratives about relationships, home, and family that somehow ring true with universal memories. In this workshop, he will invite the students into his world as he makes photographs along side them. He will teach how to use low and available light sources to capture dramatic portraits. The students will work with models and/or local subjects, both indoors & outdoors, and photograph outdoor locations to explore the narrative power that is activated when one sequences a person with a place. Find out why 12 books of his work have been published in 10 years.

GREG GORMAN: The Fine Art Female & Male Nude

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/greg1.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/greg2.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/greg5.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/greg3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/greg4.jpg]

This unique workshop focuses on photographing both female and male models and emphasizes the classical approach Gorman is famous for. Sculptural, beautifully lit and posed, a Gorman nude is recognizable because it is evocative and timeless. Workshop attendees will work on location in beautiful settings, with available light as well as in the studio. Greg will demonstrate his methods of posing models, lighting, and explain how he infuses his images with such power and form. Each attendee will have time to work with the models and will have Gorman’s input as the class progresses. Greg will present his work and there will be class critiques. This workshop will be limited to a maximum of 12 students, and will be a full four day class with a two-hour wrap up on the fifth morning.

Portraiture

FRANK OCKENFELS III: Signature Portraiture

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/frank1s.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/frank6s.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/frank5s.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/frank4s.jpg]

Spend three days working and learning from one of the most unique and risk-taking editorial portrait photographers in the business today. “This workshop will serve as a reminder of why we take pictures. We will explore looking at and playing with natural light, alternative lights and lights we find at night. It is a hands-on workshop where I will guide students through my methods; how I see, work and find light. This is not a conventional studio class; strobe and hot lights will not be addressed.” Frank’s class fills quickly, so don’t delay if you plan to register.

GREGORY HEISLER: Powerful Environmental Portraiture

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/heisler1.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/heisler3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/heisler2.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/heisler4.jpg]

Gregory Heisler is one of our most celebrated portrait photographers. He has worked for literally hundreds of publications throughout his amazing career. In this exciting and informative class, Gregory Heisler will explain and demonstrate the philosophy and methodology behind his iconic environmental portraits, balancing a conscious process of decision-making with the intuitive, unpredictable shifts that inevitably occur during the making of a portrait. This is a shooting workshop with valuable critiques.

Documentary & Photojournalism

STEVE SCHAPIRO: Documentary Photography

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/schapiro1s.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/schapiro2s.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/schapiro3s.jpg]

Steve will present the arc of his iconic and extraordinary documentary photography and conduct class critiques. He will speak about story development, how to conceive and develop a point of view for working in the documentary genre. Attendees will photograph in nearby towns and focus on finding stories, meeting subjects, and bringing an unique personal approach to the journalistic aspects of documentary photography. Schapiro is a master of the genre. A workshop not to miss!

STANLEY GREENE: Photojournalism

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/stanley1a.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/stanley2.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/stanley3.jpg]

These three days will have the potential to be a game-changer for photographers interested in understanding what photojournalism means in our times and how a very prominent and successful storyteller decides where to go, what to cover and most importantly, bring a personal vision and commitment to the task. In this workshop, Stanley Greene will present and discuss his work and his methods / process. He will review the work of the workshop attendees and offer direction and input. The class will spend 1.5 to 2 days in the field, photographing and reviewing progress. There will be ample one-on-one time with attendees and time devoted to class critiques. Students of this class will emerge with a real look at how a photojournalist approaches assignments, what steps are necessary to establish a narrative and tell stories.

Architecture

TIM GRIFFITH: Architecture Photography: Building Relationships

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/tim5.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/tim1a.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/tim2.jpg]

Over three and half days, this workshop will have access to a number of locations in Palm Springs, both residential and commercial in scale. Each will provide an opportunity to discuss and then put into practice various approaches to illustrating the story of the design. During the practical sessions, discussion and demonstration of specific technical issues associated with both large and small format digital capture will be undertaken. This will include topics specific to architectural photography such as appropriate camera platform and lens selection, software solutions, and lighting solutions.

Landscape

DAVID MUENCH: Desert Light: Color in the Landscape

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/david1d.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/david2.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/david4.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/david3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/david5b.jpg]

The American grand-master of the color landscape (author of over 55 monographs!) returns for the 3rd time to the Palm Springs Photo Festival. The locales around Palm Springs are abundant with color in April. David has been working in the area for decades and knows the best places to photograph. There will be field trips to nearby destinations such as Joshua Tree National Park, Anza Borrego Canyons, possibly the Salton Sea and other areas. Be ready for a sunrise expedition!

Underwater

ELENA KALIS: Photographing Models Underwater

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/elena4.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/elena3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/elena1a.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/elena7.jpg]

In this unusual workshop, students will learn the basics of photographing models on and under the water for exceptional, magical and surreal images. We will keep it simple, giving the students the tools to get started and encourage them to ask questions about areas that they are interested in. Bring your swimsuit – we supply the rest! We’ll be working in both pools at our workshop headquarters, Korakia Pensione.

Wet-Plate Collodion, Tin-Types & Holgas

IAN RUHTER: The Past & the Future: Working with Wet-Plate Collodion, Tin-Types & Holga Cameras

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/ian1a.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/ian3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/ian2.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/ian4.jpg]

Curious about making works of art using alternative processes? In this class, you will be able to experience and work with the world’s largest wet plate camera. Participants will also learn how to make 19th century tin-types from start to finish using Holga cameras! One of the things that makes this class so unique is attendees will integrate modern lighting (strobe and HMI) with this antique process, allowing you to make portraits in a way that has been unheard of in the history of the medium until now.

TWO-DAY WORKSHOPS

FLETCHER MURRAY: The Basic DSLR Video Production Bootcamp. April 28-29

Join renowned instructor Fletcher Murray for these two, two-day classes and leave the festival with a solid overview of shooting motion video with DSLR cameras. The Basic DSLR Video Bootcamp is for novices and seasoned professional photographers and filmmakers who want to learn the basics of professional DSLR filmmaking. This is an updated version of the sold-out workshop we presented in 2012 and 2013 at the Palm Springs Photo Festival. You’ll learn step by step, at your own speed, in a relaxed, hands on environment. Students are NOT obliged to attend both classes.

FLETCHER MURRAY: The Advanced DSLR Video Production Bootcamp. April 30, May 1.

In the advanced filmmaking workshop, Murray will explain how to design and execute powerful moving images. You’ll learn how to prep a shoot – storyboards, shot selection, lens choices, camera support systems, lighting and pacing…all of it. There will be camera operation drills of both documentary camera and narrative film camera techniques. You’ll learn which shutter speeds will augment the action, how to use hand-held rigs, car mounts, jib arms and sliders. The class will explore the boundaries of your DSLR’s low light capability as we shoot scenes for a short film. We’ll show you how to use and augment existing light, and how to remove light for a more “cinematic” look. Our pro crew will be there to help you achieve the Bootcamp’s Pro Level Two Certification.

ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS

[http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/brian1.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/brian2.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/brian3.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/brian4.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/brian5.jpg] [http://2014.palmspringsphotofestival.com/images/brian6.jpg]

This year we will present two unique portrait lighting workshops by Sony Artisan Brian Smith. These are both intensive one-day courses. They are timed to enable you to take these in addition to other workshops if desired, as they take place on Thursday and Friday, while most other workshops run Monday – Wednesday with a wrap-up Thursday morning. Brian has worked for countless magazines and corporate clients on assignment. His methods are designed for portraiture where time is of the essence – you’re on a job with a tight schedule and have to move quickly and precisely to nail it. He is all about the subject – how to light them beautifully and make multiple portraits with time constraints.
