Prizewinners will be exhibited at the photography gallery at The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Editor’s selections will be exhibited in several Photo Review web galleries. Juror: Peter Barberie, Curator of Photographs at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and curator of recent shows by Zoe Strauss and Mark Cohen.

SlowArt Productions presents the annual group thematic exhibition, A Show of Heads. The exhibition will be held at the Limner Gallery from October 27 November 25, 2012. Open to all artists working in any media, this exhibition will include all interpretations and portrayals of the human head, from the traditional to the abstract and conceptual. All visions of the head, including partial and multiple heads, will be reviewed and considered.

Eligibility: The competition is open to all artists, national and international, working in all media. All forms of painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, graphics, digital and installation art, video, etc. are eligible. Entrants must be 18 years of age or older to apply. Wall mounted works must not be taller than 72″ no wider than 120″. Sculptural work must fit through a 36″ wide entry door.

Exhibition and awards: Winning artists will be featured in a group exhibition at the Limner Gallery, October 27- November 25, 2012. The exhibition will also be displayed on the Limner Gallery web site. One artist will be awarded a two page display in Direct Art Volume #20, Fall 2013 issue. Two artists will be awarded a single page display.

All works in the show must be for sale. The gallery will take a 30% commission on all sales. Sale price is determined by the artist. Entry fee to enter.

The Art of Photography Show is an established and critical force in the world of contemporary photography. Now in its 8th year, this presentation of world class photography is truly exquisite. The show provides tangible benefits to artists trying to break into the public eye. The judge for this year’s exhibit is Julian Cox, the Founding Curator of Photography and Chief Curator at the de Young Museum in San Francisco.

Soho Photo Gallery of New York City is pleased to announce its 17th National Juried Competition. The competition is open to all U.S. residents, age 18 and older, excluding current members of Soho Photo Gallery.

All photo-based works are eligible, with no limitation as to subject matter or technique. The show will run from July 5 through August 4, 2012 in our gallery in the TriBeCa section of New York City. Entry fee.

The juror, Forrest Old, will choose approximately 35 photographs for the exhibition. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded. At least two honorable mentions will be given at the discretion of the juror. Forrest Old is owner of the Red Filter Fine Art Photography Gallery (www.redfiltergallery.com) in Lambertville, NJ.

From their website: This is an open Call for Submissions from artists all over the USA for an exhibit in our gallery – an 8000 square foot Civil War-era warehouse on the Red Hook waterfront. With its trendy restaurants, bars, boutiques and billion dollar view of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor, it’s an exciting place to visit and EXHIBIT. The enormous space of the gallery affords us the opportunity to exhibit really huge work, and we welcome it. We are fortunate to be joined by a prestigious juror – Brooke Kamin Rapaport, former curator in Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and guest curator at NY’s Jewish Museum. With her experience, expect an exceptionally exciting exhibition!

Theme: This juried show looks to explore this idea of “color” in all the hidden niches of our collective psyche.

Eligibility: This call for submission is open to all residents of the U.S. and its Territories, 18 years of age or older. This is a juried exhibition for artists working in all traditional and non-traditional 2D and 3D media, including film/video when part of an installation. All artwork must be original in concept, design and execution. Note: Crafts, kit work or reproductions of original works in other media (such as giclee print of oil painting), unless used as part of a mixed media work, will not be considered. Oversize Work, Assemblages and Installations are welcome at the discretion of BWAC, but must meet all other specifications and be delivered, installed and removed by the artist (or their agent) upon arrangement with BWAC staff. All work requiring electricity must auto on/off with the line power.

The Manuel Rivera-Ortiz Foundation for International Photography is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization committed to fostering positive social discourse in underrepresented communities throughout the world by encouraging emerging and established photographers working in developing nations to keep their lenses fixed on the plight of the poor and disenfranchised. Headquartered in New York, with a presence in Paris and Zurich, the foundation serves the international photographic community through exhibitions, publishing, grants, education, and other curatorial projects.

For the second year, the foundation has announced that it is seeking entries of outstanding work in social documentary photo reportage.

Photographers around the world are encouraged to submit entries focusing on lives and populations ravaged by war, famine, poverty, religious persecution, political oppression, forced migration, and other social injustices. One winning submission will be awarded a grant of $5,000 to be utilized for the production or completion of a social documentary project.

Photographers of all nationalities who are at least 18 years of age are encouraged to apply.

Looking at both the vast and the microscopic, landscape photography takes us from backyards to national parks; from mountains to coastlines. This genre includes images of the untouched beauty of the earth as well as places impacted by mankind. In addition to beauty, it often explores the contours of our relationship with the land, presenting historic battlefields, high-rise jungles, or threatened environments. For Terrain, The Kiernan Gallery seeks images that explore the beauty and complexity of our landscape.

For this exhibition, juror Sean Kernan will select up to 30 images for display in the main gallery, and up to an additional 40 to be included in the online gallery. All images will be reproduced in an exhibition catalogue available for purchase. A Juror’s Choice and Director’s Choice will also be announced. Entry fee.

All photographic media are encouraged.

Juror, Sean Kernan. Sean Kernan is a photographer, writer, and teacher. He came to photography from theater, and is the author of two monographs, The Secret Books and Among Trees. He has exhibited at galleries and museums internationally. His photographs have been published in the New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian, New York, Harpers, Bloomberg, Communication Arts, Graphis, Polyrama, Photo World, and has done a wide range of advertising work. He has taught and lectured at New School/Parsons, Maine Media Workshops and Santa Fe Workshops, Art Center (Pasadena), International Center for Photography, University of Texas, Wesleyan University, Yale Medical School, and has numerous awards, most recently from the Center in Santa Fe for teaching, as well as a Doctorate (HC) from Art Center in Pasadena. Organized and presented by four Women’s Caucus for the Arts chapters, South Bay Area, Northern California, Peninsula, and Monterey Bay as well as the National Steinbeck Center for the 4-Chapter WCA Honoring Women’s Right Conference, September 8th, 2012. The artists at this conference use art to make honoring women’s rights statements and call more attention to the challenges we face today, with hopes of seeing change for a better today and tomorrow. Other equally important goals are to encourage young people to find their artistic voices and learn important and interesting women’s history stories. This exhibit is open to all artists of the self-identified women in the greater United States. Entry fee.

The Women’s Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art is pleased to announce its second Photography Portfolio Competition. The competition is open to all photographers age 18 or older. A jury of nationally recognized experts will select one photograph by each of six artists for inclusion in a 16″ x 20″ portfolio to be published in an edition of 25 in fall 2012. Entry fee: $45.

Peter Barberie, The Brodsky Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center, Philadelphia Museum of Art, will select one additional curator’s choice entry to be sold as an individual print in a limited edition. The Museum will exhibit the portfolio and the individual print in fall 2012 and a In Focus event will be held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on October 11, 2012, to celebrate the production of the portfolio. Jurors will include photographer Andrea Modica, photography critic Vince Aletti, as well as Peter Barberie.

The competition is open to everyone over the age of eighteen, regardless of nationality.

Awards: Each winning photographer will be awarded $1,000 and a 2012 Photography Portfolio. The curator’s choice photographer will receive $500 and an individual print. Winning artists will receive 5 percent from the sale of the portfolios. The curator’s choice artist will receive 5 percent from the sale of the individual print. The portfolio and curator’s choice photographs will become part of the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Considerations: The portfolio will be sold through the Women’s Committee of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in a limited edition of twenty-five boxed sets to be produced by Silicon Gallery. Two additional editions will be printed for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and for the Women’s Committee. The portfolio will include six photographs and information about each artist. The curator’s choice photograph will be sold as an individual print in a limited edition.

All applications for the 2012 Philadelphia Museum of Art Photography Portfolio Competition must be submitted online. There is a non-refundable processing fee of $45 payable online.

– Each applicant must submit 10-15 images that represent original work created no earlier than January 1, 2010.
– Applicants must submit their portfolio to SlideRoom online at: https://pmaphoto.slideroom.com. Applicants may upload 10-15 images (jpg). For good image quality and fast upload, image files should be sized no larger than 1220px @ 72 dpi. The SlideRoom portal offers additional instructions for submitting work and for helping new applicants get started. For technical assistance, access the help desk at http://slideroom.zendesk.com.
– Files should be labeled with the artist’s last name and first initial, and by an image entry number. (For example, Jane Doe’s entries would be labeled DoeJ1, DoeJ2, and so on). – Artists must be 18 years of age or older.
– The Philadelphia Museum of Art shall have the perpetual right to display accepted works and to reproduce accepted works for educational and promotional purposes in both printed and electronic form.
– Each artist warrants that he or she has obtained all necessary releases from models and other subjects featured in photographs selected for exhibition and any additional releases required with respect to names, trademarks, designs, or works of art depicted in the photograph and that the creation, display, or distribution of the photographs will not violate any law.
– Submission of an entry to this competition implies acceptance of all conditions here stated.
